When microglia do phagocytosis, they lose some of their external cellular membrane (because it gets made into the membrane of an internal vacuole). You can measure how much membrane is lost by measuring the input capacitance of the cell before and after phagocytosis. You do this measurement and find that after a phagocytosis event, a particular microglial cell lost 480 fF of input capacitance. (f = "femto" = 10-15.) Assuming a specific membrane capacitance of 10 fF/m2, calculate how much membrane was lost during this phagocytosis event in units of m2. Show your work.Note: 10 fF/m2 equals 1F/cm2, the value stated in class for specific membrane capacitance.
