Our level of self-esteem is related to how we compare ourselves to others as well as to our past selves. People with self-esteem tend to make downward comparisons whereas people with self-esteem tend to make upward comparisons. We also make comparisons by comparing our current with our past selves; when doing this, in order to protect a positive sense of self, we make comparisons of how we used to be in the past.
