What principles did Woodrow Wilson want to serve as the basis of the peace settlement? What promises did Lenin hold out to his supporters should the revolution succeed? Both Wilson and Lenin offered a vision for the postwar world. Wilson's is based on a liberal vision, coming out of the tradition of Adam Smith (one of the Fourteen Points not mentioned in the reading is support for free trade) and John Locke based on representative forms of governance. Lenin offers one based on the socialist vision on behalf of the proletariat coming out of the ideas of Karl Marx and advanced by a revolutionary elite. Which one do you think is more promising? Which is more realistic?
