BINOMIAL NOMENCLATURE An eighteenth-century Swedish naturalist, Carolus Linnaeus, created the system of classification and scientific names we use in biology today. Linnaeus named and classified all known plants and animals, assigning each organism a two-part name called a binomial. The first word of the binomial designates a specific group to which the organism belongs; this is the genus name. For example, all oak trees belong to the genus Quercus, a word derived from Latin. Each kind of organism within a genus is given a specific name- the specific epithet, always an adjective. Thus, the scientific name in the Linnean system for Shumard's oak is Quercus shumardii (species name is shumardii) while that of one kind of live oak is Quercus virginiana (species name is virginiana). The genus name is always capitalized; the species name is not capitalized. The binomial is written italics or underlined. If a species name is used more than once, we write out the full genus name and specific epithet the first time, and then abbreviate the genus name every time thereafter. For example, now we may call live oak Q. virginiana. Write the following binomials in correct format: Man - homo sapiens Gorilla - gorilla gorilla Dog - canis familiaris Cat - felis domesticus
