Many bacteria that cause diseases in humans become resistant over time to the drugs used to treat them through natural selection. One common example of these bacteria is methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MRSA infections are occurring at alarming rates. One reason for this could be that people do not finish their antibiotics. Which of the following is the most likely reason that this could lead to something like MRSA? Antibiotics take a while to start working, giving the bacteria time to mount defenses against the antibiotics over a few days. Over time, people's immune systems have gotten used to the antibiotics, so those antibiotics no longer work. Because antibiotics are often taken when there is no bacterial infection, the antibiotics aren't using their medicinal/antibacterial properties and are losing them. The first few days of antibiotics kill off the weak bacteria, making people feel better. Then, when people stop taking the antibiotics too soon, the strong bacteria that survived have been selected, reproduce, and create a stronger population.

When you receive a prescription for an antibiotic, your doctor or pharmacist will tell you that it is very important to take the medication for the full time period, even if you start to feel better before the end of the prescription.
