Biography

Hi, I'm going to be a senior in physics next semester. I have both Chinese and American education backgrounds since I stayed back in China before admitted to Case. Thus, I'm very familiar with basic physics knowledge and capable of explaining things in English. Besides, helping people has been a motivator for me to continue studying. That's all about myself.

A catapult launches a rocket at an angle of $53.0^{\circ}$ above the horizontal with an initial speed of $100 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}$. The rocket engine immediately starts a burn, and for $3.00 \mathrm{~s}$ the rocket moves along its initial line of motion with an acceleration of $30.0 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}^{2} .$ Then its engine fails, and the rocket proceeds to move in free fall. Find (a) the maximum altitude reached by the rocket, (b) its total time of flight, and (c) its horizontal range.

A car is parked on a steep incline overlooking the ocean, where the incline makes an angle of $37.0^{\circ}$ below the horizontal. The negligent driver leaves the car in neutral, and the parking brakes are defective. The car rolls from rest down the incline with a constant acceleration of $4.00 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}^{2}$, traveling $50.0 \mathrm{~m}$ to the edge of a vertical cliff. The cliff is $80.0 \mathrm{~m}$ above the ocean. Find
(a) the speed of the car when it reaches the edge of the cliff and the time it takes to get there, (b) the velocity of the car when it lands in the ocean, (c) the total time the car is in motion, and (d) the position of the car when it lands in the ocean, relative to the base of the cliff.

Physics 102 Electricity and Magnetism

A problem of practical interest is to make a beam of electrons turn a $90^{circ}$ corner. This can be done with the parallelplate capacitor shown in RiculeE P27.54.
An electron with kinetic energy $3.0 imes 10^{-17} mathrm{J}$ enters through a small hole in the bottom plate of the capacitor.
a. Should the bottom plate be charged positive or negative relative to the top plate if you want the clectron to turn to the right? Explain.
b. What strength electric field is needed if the electron is to emerge from an exit hole $1.0 mathrm{cm}$ away from the entrance hole, traveling at right angles to its original direction? Hint: The difficulty of this problem depends on how you choose your coordinate system.
c. What minimum separation $d_{ ext {mila }}$ must the capacitor plates have?
