Hektoen-Enteric Agar contains bile salts and the dyes bromthymol blue and acid fuchsin which inhibit the growth of most Gram-positive organisms. It contains lactose, sucrose, and salicin, which cannot be used by either Shigella or Salmonella. Bacteria that metabolize sugars acidify the medium and turn a pH indicator yellow or red. The medium also contains peptone, which can be used as a carbon source by Shigella or Salmonella. Peptone metabolism by Shigella and Salmonella produces NH4 and turns bromthymol blue blue. Thiosulfate or ferric ammonium citrate in the medium produces a black precipitate in the presence of H2S, allowing Shigella, which does not produce H2S, to appear as green colonies. Salmonella, which does produce H2S, appear as black colonies. Based on this information alone, what kind of medium is Hektoen-Enteric Agar?
