A student is viewing a picture of a round microbe. Another student asks what type of microbe is in the picture. The students discuss that it could be a fungal spore, a round bacterial cell or a viral particle. What information do the students need to help them speculate on the type of microbe that is present in the picture? Include in your answer three images from the internet that represent each microbe group and show the characteristics that you have mentioned.

The microbes discovered in Lake Whillans and Pitch Lake represented a few of the general categories of microbial life. Drag the images and/or descriptions to their corresponding class to test your understanding of the main types of microbes used by humans in the production of some antibiotics. These include prokaryotic organisms, photosynthetic organisms that require electron microscopy for visualization, genetic engineering used to produce alternative fuels, spores for genetic material, bacteria, protozoans, fungi, viruses, helminths, and algae.

Prepared Bacteria Slides (3 pts) The images below show the three common shapes of bacteria at 100X and 400X. Using the Internet, find images of bacteria shapes and match the shape of each bacteria to the photos in the table (A-C). The possible bacteria types are Bacillus, Coccus, and Spirillum. Complete the table by identifying the bacteria type and briefly describing the morphology of each bacteria. Bacteria 100x 400x Bacteria Type and Description

How do you figure out what micro-organism lives in this drop of water from the pond that you just put on the slide? The first step is to determine if it is a prokaryote or single/multicellular eukaryote. Match the following descriptions to the group of organism and the examples it corresponds: These are prokaryotes, a.k.a. bacteria! Examples: stentor (trumpet shape), euglena, diatoms, green algae, oomycetes, cilliates Gram positive or gram negative bacteria, sulfur bacteria, cyanobacteria This is a multicellular microscopic eukaryote! This is protist or unicellular eukaryote! Examples: tardigrade, rotifers, hydras, gastrotrich 1. it moves around, it has arms and legs and inside structures (that are probably organs), maybe even eyes? 2. it moves around, but you can't see clearly defined structures and parts. You can see organelles though, and cillia or flagella, they can be green. 3. these are MUCH smaller, they look like static tiny dots (with some exceptions), can't see parts or inside organelles (because of their size and they don't have any)
