What effect would DNP have on ATP production? If added to culture media, which of the following do you predict would happen? Please explain. 1) Obligate aerobes would be able to grow but slower than before. 2) Obligate anaerobes would not be able to grow. 3) Facultative anaerobes would be able to grow but slower than before. 4) Aerotolerant anaerobes would not be able to grow.

This means that DNP interferes with the electron transport chain, which is responsible for generating a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane, which in turn drives the synthesis of ATP. When DNP is added to culture media, it would affect the Show more…

What would happen to ATP production if 1. the proteins in the inner mitochondrial membrane were heated to 60 degrees? 2. ATP synthase was damaged and no longer allowed protons to flow through it? 3. Pyruvate decarboxylase was denatured, and no longer cleaved a carbon off of pyruvate? 4. Oxygen was no longer able to bind to the cytochrome complex? 5. FADH2 was able to give electrons to NADH dehydrogenase instead of ubiquinone? 6. NADH could only give electrons to ubiquinone instead of the NADH dehydrogenase complex? 7 . Phosphofructokinase was removed from the cell.

If LDH was mutated or inhibited, what is a likely result under anaerobic conditions? Generation of ATP would slow due to increased pyruvate. Oxamate product would build up in glycolysis. Lactic acid buildup would occur and be immediately toxic to the cells. Pyruvate and lactate would alternate in production.

When the drug dinitrophenol (DNP) is added to mitochondria, the inner mitochondrial membrane becomes permeable (leaky) to protons (H+). List the effect of a leaky inner mitochondrial membrane on the following: 1. The H+ gradient across the inner membrane. 2. ETC – continues or STOPS? 3. ATP synthesis – continues or STOPS? 4. Energy - from the passive diffusion of H+ due to the "leaky" membrane– what happens to it? 5. Oxygen consumption – continues or STOPS (i.e., will oxygen continue to accept e- from complex IV and becoming reduced to H2O) ? 6. Why does DNP intake result in weight loss? Propose an explanation.
