I am very passionate about teaching. I love to learn and teach all subjects, but especially Biology and Math. I have been a certified teacher for more than 4 years now.
Even though nectar serves no function in the life of a plant other than to attract and reward pollinators, some plants produce toxic compounds in their nectar. As we've seen, in some cases these substances are addictive and encourage pollinators to revisit the same plant species; honey bees, for example, may visit tobacco flowers repeatedly because they become "addicted" to nicotine (see Section 56.3). But another study had a different outcome. Some researchers created genetically modified tobacco plants that produced different levels of nicotine in their nectar and found that higher concentrations led to shorter visits by pollinating hummingbirds and hawk moths- and more successful pollination than in plants whose flowers hosted longer visits. Why might shorter visits increase pollination success? What other factors might influence how much nicotine a tobacco plant should produce in its nectar?
Explain the roles of DNA helicase, DNA polymerase, and DNA ligase in the process of DNA replication.
Name the three types of RNA that are essential to protein synthesis. What is the function of each?
What is the function of ribosomes? Where in the cell are they found? Are they limited to eukaryotic cells?
The majority of all plants are seed plants. What is the advantage of a seed? How do plants that lack seeds meet the needs served by seeds?
You found that your recombinant GST-DHFR-His protein was not functional after finishing the experiment. What is one issue that went wrong to cause the protein to become non-functional? Where in the procedures listed below would this issue have occurred? Explain.
Procedures:1. Recombinant protein expression and purification2. Cell and Plasmid Selection for Protein Expression3. Protein Purification and Quantification (Coomassie Assay)4. SDS-PAGE5. Western Blot6. Computational Sequence Analysis (IMC)
Suppose that the probability that a passenger will miss a flightis 0.0979. Airlines do not like flights withempty seats, but it is also not desirable to have overbookedflights because passengers must be "bumped" from the flight.Suppose that an airplane has a seating capacityof 58 passengers.(a) If 60 tickets are sold, what is theprobability that 59 or 60 passengers show upfor the flight resulting in an overbooked flight?(b) Suppose that 64 tickets are sold. What is theprobability that a passenger will have to be "bumped"?(c) For a plane with seating capacityof 290 passengers, what is the largest number of ticketsthat can be sold to keep the probability of a passengerbeing "bumped" below 1%?
A series of Hfr strains that have genotype $m^{+} n^{+} o^{+} p^{+}$ $q^{+} r^{+}$ are mixed with an $F^{-}$ strain that has genotype $m^{-} n^{-} o^{-} p^{-} q^{-} r^{-} .$ Conjugation is interrupted at regular intervals and the order of the appearance of genes from the Hfr strain is determined in the recipient cells. The order of gene transfer for each Hfr strain is $\begin{array}{ll}\text { Hfr5 } & m^{+} q^{+} p^{+} n^{+} r^{+} o^{+} \\ \text {Hfr4 } & n^{+} r^{+} o^{+} m^{+} q^{+} p^{+} \\ \text {Hfr } 1 & o^{+} m^{+} q^{+} p^{+} n^{+} r^{+}\end{array}$ Hfr9 $o^{+} m^{+} q^{+} p^{+} n^{+} r^{+}$$q^{+} m^{+} o^{+} r^{+} n^{+} p^{+}$ What is the order of genes on the circular bacterial chromosome? For each Hfr strain, give the location of the F factor in the chromosome and its polarity.
Assume that birthdays are equally likely to occur on all possible days in any given year, so there are no seasonal variations or day of the week variations.Suppose you have two siblings, and all three of you were born in the same month of the year. Explain how you could use simulation to estimate the probability that in a family of three children they are all born in the same month. You do not have to provide exact details about how you would actually simulate each birthday.
